Savings Recommendations

The recommendations below will start you on the road to savings. By saving energy, you can cut your household costs and help to protect the environment at the same time. You can implement these simple, low-cost measures and practices yourself!

Apply for a Home Energy Savings Loan.
Qualified customers can borrow up to $15,000 for 10 years to make certain energy-saving home improvements. Your loan payment might be as low as $50 monthly ... your annual energy savings can be significant. For details, call 1-800-355-8439.

Install a programmable thermostat ...save up to $ 93 a year.
Replace your older thermostat with a programmable set-back thermostat, if you haven't already. Do-it-yourself by buying one at a home improvement retailer or call an licensed contractor for professional installation.

Set-back your water heater thermostat ...save up to $ 25 a year.
Your water heater might operate just as efficiently if you set the thermostat to 120 degrees. See your appliance manual or a fix-it guide.

Savings and Maintenance Tips

Heating and Cooling Systems
Clean or replace your furnace and air conditioner filters monthly.
Set your home thermostat between 76°-78° in the summer, and 66°- 68° in the winter.
Install a programmable thermostat. It automatically sets your thermostat back when you're asleep or not home.
Have your system inspected annually by a licensed heating and cooling contractor to keep it in top operating condition.
Caulk and weatherstrip windows, doors, and other openings to reduce drafts.
Install reflective films or solar shade screens on exposed east/west windows to reduce solar heat gain.
Planting shrubbery and trees to shade south and west walls can reduce air conditioning costs.
Consider upgrading to a high efficiency air conditioner system with a SEER rating of 12 or higher.
Increase your attic insulation level up to R-38 (10 - 12 inches), or R-30 for warmer climates.
Insulate exposed floors over crawl spaces.
Consider installing roof or eave vents to prevent heat and moisture build-up if your attic is not ventilated.
Install carbon monoxide detectors if your home has combustion equipment.
Enhance your indoor air quality by adding high efficiency air conditioner filters. Some high efficiency filters may reduce air flow to your air conditioner so check with your air conditioner contractor first.
Water Heating and Related Appliances
Wrap an insulation blanket around your water heater.
Install pipe insulation/wrap on exposed water heater lines.
Set your water heater's temperature to 120° (140° if you use a dishwasher).
Install low flow shower heads and faucet aerators to reduce hot water use.
Wash and rinse most clothes in cold water.
Kitchen Appliances and Lighting
Install compact fluorescents wherever you can. Although they are initially more expensive, your savings in electricity costs could pay for the bulb in about a year.
Replace standard fluorescent lamps and ballasts with T-8 lamps and electronic ballasts.
Install photocells or motion detectors on outdoor lights.
Clean refrigerator coils and check door seals regularly.
Use your microwave oven to reduce cooking time.
Other Energy Uses
When you buy new appliances, look for models with high energy efficiency.
Turn off appliances, like the TV, when they're not being used.
